Handbook of Agriculture By ICAR, The Handbook Of Agriculture: Facts And Figures For Farmers, Students And All Interested in Farming by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is a “know-it-all” on agriculture with content for students, researchers, farmers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is one of ICAR’s most widely read publications.

Summary Of The Book

In the quest to address all the key stakeholders of the art and science of agriculture in India which involves the farmer, the land owner, the student and researcher, the scientist and the policy maker, ICAR has come up with progressive editions of their definitive agriculture handbook keeping the Indian context at the forefront.

The Handbook Of Agriculture: Facts And Figures For Farmers, Students And All Interested In Farming begins with a chapter on the evolution of the Indian National Agricultural Research Systems. The following few chapters deal with the interplay of various natural resources with the science of agriculture. Topics such as weather, environment, soil, water resources, land utilization and hills are covered. One of the chapters in this section of the book also covers the concept of agro biodiversity.

The handbook then moves on to conservation related chapters and other chapters on irrigation technology, weed and diseases, cropping technology, pest management, and apiculture. Stress is then laid on the technology element in agriculture. Machinery, storage technology and power, and energy are among the issues covered here. On the same note, new marketing fundamentals and trading techniques along with farm management methods are discussed. Post this, the chapters deal individually with a large variety of crops. The last few chapters are about topics such as informatics, biotechnology and intellectual property rights.

Over the years, the Handbook Of Agriculture: Facts And Figures For Farmers, Students And All Interested In Farming has, through progressive new editions, grown to cover more technology related content and has remained up to date with the latest research in agriculture in India.

This book is published by the Indian Council of Agricultural research, which is based out of New Delhi and is a part of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, which comes under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of India.

Established in 1929, the ICAR was earlier known as the Imperial Council for Agricultural Research. Since 1950, the ICAR has played a pivotal role in enabling the country to increase its food grain production.
